Yarn: Two different colours of 4ply weight sock yarn; the sock pictured was knit with two different variegated yarns.
Glossary:
S2K2tog = Slip 2 stitches knitwise from the left needle onto the right needle, then knit 2 together on the right needle.
K2Tog: Knit 2 stitches together
Slip1=Slip stitch from left to right needle without knitting it.
Sizes: - Small/Medium Adult;
- Medium/Large Adult ;
- Large/Extra Large Adult
Sizing Help: The slip stitch pattern makes quite an inflexible fabric, so it's probably best to err on the large side. You could also move up a needle size, to 3mm diameter needles, if you would like to make the fabric a little more stretchy.
Tension: approximately 32 stitches per 10cm.
Begin: Cast on 60 (72, 84) stitches over 3 double pointed 2.5mm needles; place a marker between the first and last stitch. Working in the round, work 12 (14, 16) rounds of Knit 1, Purl 1 Rib. Then, knit a round in which you increase by one stitch every 6 stitches: you can do this by knitting into both the front and the back of every 6th stitch. You should now have 70 (84, 98) stitches.
The Waterfalls pattern is knit using two differently coloured yarns. You should now name one of your yarns A, and the other yarn B.
Waterfalls pattern:
1. Using A, **K7, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
3. Using B, **S1, K7, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
5. Using A, **K1, S1, K7, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
7. Using B, **S1, K1, S1, K7, S1, K1, S1, K1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
9. Using A, **K1, S1, K1, S1, K7, S1, K1, S1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
11. Using B, **S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K7, S1, K1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
13. Using A, **K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K7, S1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
15. Using B, **S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K7. Repeat from ** to end of round.
17. Using A, **K7, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
19. Using B, **K6, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1. Repeat from ** to end of round.
21. Using A, **K5, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K2. Repeat from ** to end of round.
23. Using B, **K4, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K3. Repeat from ** to end of round.
25. Using A, **K3, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K4. Repeat from ** to end of round.
27. Using B, **K2, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K5. Repeat from ** to end of round.
29. Using A, **K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K6. Repeat from ** to end of round.
31. Using B, ** S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K1, S1, K7. Repeat from ** to end of round.
Note: there are 32 rows in the pattern repeat; on every even numbered round you should repeat the previous round: use the same colour yarn to knit all knit stitches and slip all slipped stitches once more.
Continuing in Waterfalls pattern, work the cuff of the sock until it is as long as you want it to be. Stop at the marker, then turn. You will knit the heel flap back and forth, not in the round.
Knit the heel flap:
(note : the heel flap is knit with a slip stitch to make it more hard wearing)
- Slip 1, purl 33 (41, 47) then turn;
- (Slip 1, Knit 1) 17 (21, 24) times, then turn;
Repeat these 2 steps 17 (21, 24) times.
Shape the heel:
Continuing on the heel flap,
- Slip 1, purl 18 (22, 25) purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, knit 5, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, knit 7, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
- Slip 1, purl 8, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
Continue in this way until you have picked up all the stitches from the heel flap. You should end with a knitwise row.
Shape the heel gusset:
Pick up 17 (21, 25) stitches knitwise down side 1 of the heel flap. Place a marker. Knit across the stitches from the cuff, continuing with the Waterfalls pattern. Place a marker, then pick up 17 (21, 25) stitches knitwise up side 2 of the heel flap.
(Note: there will not necessarily be a full number of repeats of the Waterfalls pattern across the top of the cuff. This is fine: just work the pattern as usual and repeat as much as you can until you reach the end of the patterned section.)
Continue with the following 2 rounds, until 70 (84, 98) stitches remain in total. Please note that you should continue with Waterfalls pattern across the patterned cuff area, but knit the ‘heel’/underside part of the sock plain for now.
Continue:
- Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker; Knit 2 together, then Knit 1.
Slip the first marker, then Knit across until you reach the second marker.
Slip the second marker; Knit 1, S2K2tog, then knit to the end of the round.
- Knit a round.
When 70 (84) stitches remain, continue without decreasing until the sock is the required length, bearing in mind that the toe you will knit will be about 6 cm deep. You should now knit both the cuff and the sole of sock the with the waterfalls pattern, i.e. work the pattern all the way round, since you will now have the same whole number of repeats as you had when you knit the cuff of the sock.
Shape the toe:
You will shape the toe by decreasing at both sides of each marker.
- Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Slip the first marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the second marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit to the end of the round.
- Knit a round.
Repeat these 2 rows until 28 (32, 36) stitches remain. Arrange these stitches into 2 sets of 14 (16, 18) so that they will lie flat, with the toe decreases positioned at each end of each needle, then graft the stitches together (see below for how to graft).
Knit another sock the same.
Ready to wear!
Grafting:
Put the sewing needle in the first stitch of the front knitting needle purlways and pull the yarn all the way through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Next put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the back knitting needle knitways and pull all the way through. Again, do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Now:
- Put the sewing needle into the first stitch of the front knitting needle knitways and pull the yarn all the way through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
- Put the sewing needle purlways into the next stitch on the front knitting needle and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
- Put the sewing needle purlways into the first stitch on the back knitting needle and pull through. Drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
- Put the sewing needle into the next stitch on the back knitting needle knitways and pull through. Do not drop the stitch off the knitting needle.
Keeping working through these 4 steps until you have grafted together all the stitches, then break the thread and fasten it off on the inside of the sock.
