Description

Materials:

4ply weight sock yarn, and 2.5mm double pointed needles.

Sizes:

child (small adult foot, medium adult foot)

Start

Cast on 48 (52, 60) stitches, and arrange them over 3 double pointed 2.5mm needles. Place a marker at the start of the round. Then, working in the round, continue as follows:
Work 10 (12, 14) rounds of K1 P1 Rib.

Then continue in Fantastic Pattern, as follows:

Fantastic Pattern:

  1. Knit 1 round.
  2. (K2tog, twice; YFK, 4 times; K2tog, twice; K0 (1, 3) ) repeat to end of round (4 times in total)
  3. Knit 1 round.
  4. Knit 1 round.

Repeat these 4 rounds until the cuff of the sock is the size you want it to be, stopping at the start of round marker. Then turn.

Divide for the heel flap:

  1. S1, Purl 23 (25, 29) then turn;
  2. (S1, K1) 12 (13, 15) times

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for 11 (12, 14) more times, until the heel flap has 24 (26, 30) rows.

Shape the heel:

Continuing on the heel flap,

  • Slip 1 stitch, purl 13, (14, 16) purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  • Slip 1 stitch, knit 5, S2K2tog (see Glossary at bottom), knit 1, then turn;
  • Slip 1 stitch, purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  • Slip 1 stitch, knit 7, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
  • Slip 1 stitch, purl 8, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;

Continue in this way until you have picked up all the stitches from the heel flap.

Shape the heel gusset:

  • Pick up 12 (13, 15) stitches knitwise down side 1 of the heel flap. Place a marker.
  • Knit across the 24 (26, 30) stitches from the cuff, continuing in the Fantastic Pattern.
  • Place a marker, then pick up 12 (15, 18) stitches knitwise up side 2 of the heel flap.

Now continue with the following 2 rounds, until 48 (52, 60) stitches remain:

  1. Knit upto 3 stitches away from the first marker, then K2tog, then K1. Knit across the Fantastic patterned area, keeping to the Fantastic pattern described above, until you reach the marker. K1, S2K2tog, then knit to the end of the round.
  2. Knit a round, keeping to the wavy pattern through the patterned area.

When you have 48 (52, 60) stitches remaining, continue without decreasing until the sock is the length you require, bearing in mind that the toe you knit will be about 4 (5, 6) cm in depth.

Shape the toe:

You will shape the toe by decreasing at both sides of the place where the Fantastic pattern and the plain knitting meet; place a mid-round marker at this point (you should then have 2 markers with 24( 26, 30) stitches between them) . Stop the Fantastic pattern now, and knit all rounds.

    • K1, S2K2tog.
    • Knit up to 3 stitches away from the second marker, then K2tog, K1.
    • K1, then S2K2tog.
    • Knit up to 3 stitches away from the start of round marker, then K2tog, K1.
  1. Knit a round.

Repeat these 2 rows until 18 (22, 24) stitches remain. Arrange these 16 (20, 24) stitches into 2 sets of 8 (10, 12) , so that they will lie flat, ensuring that the hanging thread is at the back-right hand side, then graft the stitches together.

Grafting:

Put the sewing needle in the first stitch of the front knitting needle purlways and pull the yarn all the way through. Do not drop the st off the knitting needle.
Next put the sewing needle into the first st of the back knitting needle knitways and pull all the way through. Again, do not drop the st off the knitting needle.

** Now put the sewing needle into the first st of the front knitting needle knitways and pull the yarn all the way through. Drop the st off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the next st on the front knitting needle and pull through. Do not drop the st off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the first st on the back knitting needle and pull through. Drop the st off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle into the next st on the back knitting needle knitways and pull through. Do not drop the st off the knitting needle.
Rep from ** to the end of the row, then fasten off the thread.

Ready to wear!
